I came to the States to design a production at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The reason why I am still here is my first trip through the Southwest. The immense spaces, untouched and unspoiled nature in contrast with the manipulated nature of Europe, gave me a great source for inspiration.

I made a series of paintings that became known as the "Grand Canyon" period, This work has only been seen in Chicago, Tokyo, Brussels and the Museum of Modern Art in Ostend, Belgium.

Today I live in Connecticut, in the middle of the forest, surrounded by trees, rocks and the sky, with only the sound of a waterfall and birds. Living in this environment has had a great effect on my thoughts and painting

The transparency of light, the shapes of shadows, the tactility of the surrounding nature, brought me to the need for a different concept of what a landscape has to be. Not the traditional rendering of depth, but more important, to be in the center of every thing - in front, behind, to the left and to the right. This experience has an important effect on the choice that I had to make between water based paint and oil. The choice of acrylic, charcoal, pencil and sumi black ink, gave me the opportunity for more a more transparent and more graphic approach. A certain friability has come into my work, expressing the fragility of our human and natural condition.
